As you know, every festive season our beautiful beaches and tidal pools in Kalk Bay & St James attract many beach users and holidaymakers. Unfortunately the increased number of visitors also means an increase in the amount of litter, plastic bags and bottles that is left behind on our beaches, parks and roads on a daily basis. This waste, if not collected in time, blows out to sea and pollute our oceans, and could ultimately contribute to increasingly growing giant floating garbage “islands” similar to the one that currently exists in the Great Pacific Gyre
Residents of Kalk Bay & St James, and the Ratespayers Association have joined forces with The Jungle Theatre Company to run a Stop Litter Campaign through a series of street theatre performances this summer at beaches in our area (St James Tidal Pool, St James Common, Dale Brook and Harbour Beach). Using puppets, puppeteers, costumes, musicians and drummers, the performances will educate children about the damaging effects of littering to the environment, and inspire beach goers to have fun while putting litter in the right places.
The general aim is to develop a culture of public cleanliness and recycling, and we envisage these events will trigger a progressive change of attitude and effect positive action by beach users so that beach cleaning efforts can be reduced year on year by people’s own responsibility for their litter.
We have already secured some funding to get the show on the road, but in order to have daily performances throughout the school holidays and ensure maximum exposure, we need to raise additional funds. If you would like to contribute to this cause, you can contact Miranda at The Jungle Theatre Company on 021 788 5641. Also refer to the leaflet below for more information and bank account details.
